*Of a total of 2871 students, the average Kindergarten student has learned 12 sight words and the average first grader has learned 97. This month, six schools are above average in both categories (101, 103, 105, 107, 109,115 and 117).

*In Kindergarten, the average book level overall for October, 2003 was Book 3 (3.83) with the largest percentage of students overall (nearly 20%) working in that book.
*These average students have mastered the letters /b/, /t/, /a/, /c/, /r/, /m/, /n/,/s/ and /p/, and the rimes –at,-an, -am and -ap plus twelve sight words.
*They continue to read actual stories and already practice comprehension, self-correction, spelling, and fluency in the second month of kindergarten.

*There is a much greater range of student abilities in first grade
than in kindergarten with students ranging from Book 1 to Book 60.
In first grade, the average book overall for October was Book 26 (26.02) with the largest percentage of students overall (8%) working in book 32. The average student has mastered all the consonant letters and sounds and has learned all the short and long vowels.
*On average, first grade students had mastered 97 sight words.
