HERE’S A QUICK SUMMARY OF THE IMPACT OF DR. CUPP READERStm IN 17 DIFFERENT SCHOOLS. COMPARE YOUR RESULTS TO SEE HOW YOU ARE DOING. CHARTS ON FOLLOWING PAGES GIVE MORE DETAIL (# OF STUDENTS IN EACH BOOK, AVERAGE BOOK, AVERAGE NUMBER OF SIGHT WORDS MASTERED, ETC.)
Of
a total of 2558 students, the average Kindergarten student has learned 6
sight words and the average first grader has learned 85.
This first month, three schools are above average in both
categories (103, 107 and 115).
--------------------------------------------------
In Kindergarten, the average book
level overall for September, 2003 was Book 1 (1.80) with the largest
percentage of students overall (37%) working in that book – over 600
students out of 1636.
These average students have mastered the
letters /b/, /t/, /a/, /c/, /r/, /m/, /n/, and the rimes /at/ and /an/ plus
four sight words.
They have been able to read an actual
story and have already begun to practice comprehension, self-correction,
spelling, and fluency in the first month of kindergarten.
In
Kindergarten, the top performing school (#103) spent 60 minutes in small
group instruction daily using Dr. Cupp ReadersTM.
------------------------------------------------------
There is a much greater range of student abilities in first grade than
in kindergarten with students ranging from readiness level to Book 60.
In first grade, the average book
overall for September was Book 23 (23.69) with the largest percentage of
students overall (17%) working in books 31 & 32.
The average student has mastered all the consonant letters and
sounds and has learned all the short vowels except /e/.
The top performing school (working in
Book 32 on average) also is the school with the largest percentage of students
eligible for free and reduced lunch. They
have mastered all the consonant letters and sounds, and have learned all the
short and long vowels. They also
have been introduced to a technique for switching long and short vowels to
correctly decode words, addressing R-control vowels, closed syllables and open
syllables and can read some three syllable words.
These skills will continue to be reinforced through book 43.
On average, first grade students had
mastered 85 sight words. Again
the school with the greatest percentage of students eligible for free and
reduced lunch knew the most sight words at 127.
